BUTTE DE DOUE AND ST. MARTIN'S CHURCH
Located about ten kilometers northeast of Coulommiers, the small commune of Doue can pride itself on having a famous butte at the top of which a beautiful church, the church of Saint Martin, is held. This summit, the «Brie Lighthouse» as it was named, is the second of Seine-et-Marne with an altitude close to 180 m and offers a beautiful view on the brick plateau. In the beautiful days and if the fields around are rich in blond wheats, the vision offered by this ensemble is superb from the road below. Access to the church takes place via the street of the same name, a little higher at the village exit. This church is built in a place of worship already used by the Celts. It dates from the thirteenth century and has undergone few changes. It consists of a low-floor nef of wood and a high nef with high windows. The transepts are quite spectacular and even larger in the building. The most recent bell is the beginning of the nineteenth century. Inside, the decoration is rich, with some capitals of carved and painted columns dating from the end of the Roman era. The church is only open from mid-April to early November, only on Sunday afternoon. A guided tour is available for groups (reservation by telephone).
