PLAQUE DE COCHER RESTAURÉE
An old coachman's sign can be found on one of the village walls
You can discover an old coachman's plate which has recently been renovated on one of the walls of the village. These cast metal plates formerly indicated the way to coachmen and horsemen at their eye level but a little too high for pedestrians. As part of its restoration policy of small heritage, the commune has summoned the Henri Bouillant Association founded in 2017 in tribute to Henri Charles Bouillant. He invented the set of signposts of France which would be used as support for almost one century. As its inventor explains, it is a type of relief inscription plates with cast relief letters (background and letters in one go) in cast iron, zinc, copper or any other fusible metal. The Bouillant smelter has been keeping the monopoly on this type of plate known as the Bouillant System for 15 years. They were used from the north to south of France for road signs, waterways and SNCF railway stations up to the middle of last century. In the meantime, the Michelin signposts for car drivers and enamel plates came. The Henri Bouillant Association is dedicated to the maintenance and restoration of the coachman's plate, street plates, commemorative plates and cast iron crosses. A little more than 9,000 coachman's plates have been counted in France. A poetic wink at the corner of the street.
