MUSÉE HIPPOLYTE HENRY
Museum featuring old-fashioned tools, old books, a reconstructed classroom, etc
It's the only museum in the Val Briard, but it's truly exceptional. It's an anthology and a beautiful page of local history. This charming little museum is well worth a visit, as it brings together, in just a few rooms packed with historical objects, a hundred years of daily life in the Val Briard, from the mid-19th century to around 1950. Created thanks to the efforts of the Cercle Historique Fontenaisien, it occupies the town's former shower-baths, made available by the municipality. The baths were commissioned by Hippolyte Henry, mayor and benefactor of Fontenay in the early 20th century, to bring hygiene within everyone's reach. The museography is organized around a succession of different themes, focusing on objects related to daily life, medicine (including an incredible dentist's drill!), work in the fields and the farm. You'll discover tools from yesteryear, old books, a reconstructed classroom and more. Certain compositions, tools and objects will undoubtedly bring back childhood memories for visitors. The school notebooks, the blackboard where the moral of the day is chalked and the desks are particularly nostalgic. Above all, don't hesitate to ask questions of the Cercle members present during your visit. They'll be happy to answer any questions you may have, especially as they can also offer themed tours of the town or even the surrounding region.
