THE ROMAN TOWER
This Gothic-style tower in Jouarre is the last vestige of the medieval abbey church destroyed in the century.
It is the last vestige of the abbey church of the Middle Ages destroyed in the 17th century. In Romanesque style, this tower was erected at the beginning of the 12th century before being redesigned in Gothic style during the Renaissance. In 1882, the tower was levelled by 4.50 m, and the double buttresses are now higher than the roof. There is an exhibition on the work of the nuns, their production, the history and life of the monastery today. The speciality of the Benedictine community of the abbey is terracotta, so you will find many santons.
