MUSEUM OF OLDEN TIMES
A charming museum featuring numerous reconstructed scenes of everyday French life, including witchcraft objects
This charming museum is the work of Viviane de Witt, the first female auctioneer in Paris, and a great collector of folk objects! It also belongs to the Count and Countess de Witt. It can be reached just ten kilometers south of Provins. Through numerous reconstructed scenes, it vividly portrays everyday French life from 1800 to 1950, i.e. at a time when the evolution of living standards and domestic progress was probably the most spectacular. The scenes are realistic enough to appeal to all ages, from the mid-twentieth-century wood/coal-fired kitchen to the cheese press, from the cutlery maker's workshop to the barber's store, from carriages to automobiles. Younger visitors will be amazed to discover real witchcraft objects! The museum is so successful that it's easy to spend several hours there... Its designers have therefore included a restaurant: Chez ma grand-mère. The menu is decorated in the old-fashioned style, with flowery paving, small tables with Vichy tablecloths, Thonet chairs, and period pictures, engravings and drawings on the walls. The cuisine is traditional, based on fresh, seasonal produce, reminding us of the recipes of our childhood: gizzard salad, Royans ravioli with white wine sauce, sea bass fillet on a bed of leeks, sirloin with pepper sauce and French fries.
