THE EPISCOPAL CITY
A city composed of a cathedral, bishops' palace, Old Chapter and Bossuet garden with a large rectangular courtyard.
This district was once reserved for the bishop, the chapter of canons of the cathedral and their lay or ecclesiastical entourage. The architectural ensemble of the city includes the cathedral, the Palais des Évêques, the Vieux Chapitre and the Bossuet garden. In 1927, the Palais Episcopal became a municipal museum, the Musée Bossuet. All this is organized around a large rectangular courtyard and a landscaped garden that local tradition attributes to André Le Nôtre. Today, the episcopal city looks just as it did in the 18th century.
