BALLOON MONUMENT
Commemorative monument to the history of aviation
A little-known episode in the history of aviation. On April 17, 1913, five pioneers, including pilot Jacques Aumont-Thiéville, took to the skies above the French capital in the gondola of the Zodiac XIV. They flew over the Eiffel Tower at over 800 m altitude. Then an accident occurred over Fontenay-sous-Bois: the aerostat smashed into a wall, continued on its deadly course and grounded in a field in Noisy-le-Grand. In memory of these men, this monument was erected in 1939, a few meters from where the gondola crashed.
