At a time when the building is struggling to regain its former popularity, Stephen Dean's suspended installation Crescendo, specially created for the chevet of Saint-Denis Cathedral Basilica, is a great opportunity to discover or rediscover this jewel of French heritage.
Rising to a height of 15 m, the installation takes the form of a ladder adorned with coloured dichroic stained-glass windows. Interestingly, the color of the glass changes according to the angle of vision and the light source. The artist was inspired by the history of the site. Indeed, in the 12th century, Abbot Suger launched a program of stained glass windows in the abbey church, imagining a very rich iconography and shimmering colors. The windows are part of the splendor of the Seine-Saint-Denis landmark, and create a light-filled setting in the basilica's choir. The installation, in dialogue with the stained glass windows, adds an elegant contemporary touch. For further information, click here.
