The Service Historique de la Défense (SHD), part of the French Ministry of Defence's Department of Heritage, Memory and Archives (DPMA), has been preserving the State's military archives since the 17th century, and homologating military symbolism. Its collections include 450 kilometers of archives and almost a million works, crucial to the national memory. Created in 2005 by the amalgamation of the armed forces' historical services, the SHD comprises three centers in France.
