PAINTERS' JOURNEY
The route concocted by the Tourist Office links their opulent homes with bay windows and workshops, a reminder of their success
The school of painters in Écouen was founded in 1847, with the arrival of Pierre-Édouard Frère. About twenty painters will follow and dozens of students. Pancrace Bessat, Auguste Schenck or Paul Lorillon drew their inspiration from the daily peasant life. But Impressionism quickly overshadowed the school in Écouen. The route concocted by the Tourist Office links their posh homes with their bay windows and workshops, a reminder of their success. Some thirty paintings from the Écouen school can be seen in the town hall's pinacotheque.
