AQUEDUC
Aqueduct in Chérence, supplying water to the buildings of the castle of La Roche-Guyon, the park, the vegetable garden and the village fountain
This aqueduct was built in 1741 by the architect Villars on behalf of the Duchess of Enville, to supply water to the buildings of the Château de La Roche-Guyon, the estate's park and kitchen garden, and the village fountain. From the springs of Chérence, the water reached a cistern dug into the hill beneath the keep. A few manholes and other elements of this construction can still be seen along its route; in particular, it spans a charming steep alleyway leading down from the Route des Crêtes towards the village of La Roche-Guyon.
