ADAM ISLAND FOREST
This national forest has a subsoil of gypsum and limestone, which was exploited for a long time
The forest covers almost 1,600 ha, and extends over nine communes in the Val d'Oise: L'Isle-Adam, Baillet-en-France, Chauvry, Maffliers, Mériel, Montsoult, Nerville-la-Forêt, Presles and Villiers-Adam. The forest is made up of magnificent trees, some of them several hundred years old, under which it's easy to walk. The forest veteran, the Gros Chêne, is over 500 years old and measures 10 m in circumference. This state-owned forest has a gypsum and limestone subsoil that has long been exploited. Some former quarries are now used as mushroom beds.
