LITTLE AND BIG MARTROY SQUARES
Places du Petit and du Grand Martroy, two emblematic squares in Pontoise's old town center, waiting to be discovered.
In the Middle Ages, these two squares were one and the same, and an important grain market was held here. The 17th century saw the creation of Rue des Balais, which now leads from Place du Grand-Martroy to Place du Petit-Martroy, the latter serving as the forecourt for Saint-Maclou Cathedral. This urban space, which often inspired local painters, was judiciously redeveloped a few years ago to highlight the built heritage of Pontoise's old town.
