SAINT-LEU CASTLE
Castle with that of the Bottom and that of the Top, Louis Henri Joseph was found there hung, the stone column with marble cross to see
Château du Bas was built at the end of the 17th century. Louis Bonaparte, Napoleon I's brother, settled here in 1803 with Hortense de Beauharnais. He annexed the Château du Haut estate, which he had demolished. Queen Hortense remained here after her divorce, and gave many glittering parties. The estate then passed to the Bourbon-Condé family. It was here, in 1830, that Louis Henri Joseph, Duc de Bourbon and Prince de Condé, was found hanging from a window: a death that remains unexplained. Although the château no longer exists, a memorial cross stands on its site.
