Forest 192 metres high and 6 km long, located on the eponymous hillock, a vast setting to see with beautiful views of the surrounding area
Spread over the territory of several communes, including Saint-Leu-la-Forêt in the Val Parisis Communauté d'Agglomération, as well as Bessancourt, Saint-Prix and Taverny, the Forêt de Montmorency is located on the eponymous hillock, which rises to a height of 192 meters. Situated in the north-east of the region, it stretches for 6 kilometers towards the east of the département. It has a singular history: a hunting ground in the Middle Ages, it was coveted by the Ministry of the Navy, which, in 1783, wished to acquire it to obtain timber for shipbuilding, before abandoning the project, its intendant advising against clearing plots reputed to be particularly rich in game. After further clearing projects failed in the 1840s, the forest was sold in 7 lots, giving the opportunity to exploit it: charcoal making and sand extraction were the first activities carried out. It was in the 1970s and 1980s that the forest, now state-owned, became the focus of a great deal of attention: organization of public access, protection of biodiversity, rational wood production, diversification of species planted. Today, the forest is an exceptional place of discovery. This vast setting, which offers exceptional views of the surrounding area - and Paris in particular - is dotted with easy-to-access paths and very well signposted. It's impossible to explore the Val Parisis conurbation without spending some time here.
