GALLIC OPPIDUM
A Gallic oppidum dating from the Bronze Age (between 1800 and 800 BC), housing the remains of six Gallic huts.
The term "oppidum " was coined by Caesar for the fortified Celtic villages he found along his way during his war against the Gauls. Taverny was built in the Bronze Age (between 1800 and 800 BC) on a site naturally defended by three steep slopes. It was then redeveloped by man, who reinforced the mound. It was protected by a V-shaped ditch, a clay and millstone rampart, a second U-shaped ditch, 20 m wide and 3 m deep, consolidated by huge millstone blocks, and then a second, larger rampart.
