FRENCH VEXIN REGIONAL NATURAL PARK
A natural park dotted with peaceful villages and home to numerous plant and animal species, with a wide range of activities on offer.
Covering an area of 66,000 hectares, the park occupies the entire western part of the Val-d'Oise, following the departmental boundaries of the Oise (where the park joins the Cergy-Pontoise conurbation), Seine and Epte rivers, as well as the north of the Yvelines. Created in May 1995, the park now includes almost a hundred communes, themselves grouped into 6 communities of communes. It's a magnificent, unspoilt natural area dotted with peaceful villages, where you can easily forget how close Paris is. The park is home to a particularly rich fauna and flora, with species that are protected at national level. Birds, in particular, are at the heart of this protected area. Another of the region's major assets is its prestigious sites, such as La Roche-Guyon, one of France's most beautiful villages, the Impressionist town of Auvers-sur-Oise, where Vincent Van Gogh is buried, and the enchanting Domaine de Villarceaux, a unique ensemble of two châteaux (a 16th-century manor house and an 18th-century château). Other activities include hiking, fishing and horseback riding. For all the information you need to make your visit a success, visit the Maison du Parc, located in the outbuildings of Château de Théméricourt, a 15th-century fortified house. A visit here is highly recommended for those wishing to discover the French Vexin.
