RENTED-SQUARED HOUSE
Alvar Aalto's only house in France, built for the famous gallery owner Louis Carré in the 1960s.
Gallery owner Louis Carré, passionate about contemporary art, commissioned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto to build the "Maison Carré" from 1957 to 1960. His only condition: the shape of the roof - sloping to fit the landscape. The immaculate building combines unity, simplicity and rigor, and defines an ideal of expression and sophistication in the choice of materials. The interior decoration was completed by commissions from the famous gallery owner's artist friends. Listed as a historic monument, the house is Alvar Aalto's only home in France. Not to be missed.
