BEYNES CASTLE
This castle played an important role during the English invasions and during the Hundred Years War
In the 11th century, the castle was no more than a mound of earth surrounded by a wooden palisade and topped by a tower. In the 12th century, a stone wall was added, followed by nine towers in the 13th century. It played a key role during the English invasions and the Hundred Years' War, before becoming a pleasure residence in the 16th century. In 1556, Diane de Poitiers had a new dwelling built. From the 18th century onwards, the château was dismantled and gradually fell into ruin, before being listed on the Inventaire supplémentaire des Monuments historiques in 1959.
