THE OLD DRYER
Dryer suspended in draughty buildings in winter, with a stove inside to heat the room.
Today's municipal library bears witness to an important part of Bougival's economic history. The abundance of water, the presence of a wealthy clientele and the proximity of Paris gave rise to a laundry industry that developed from the 18th century onwards. While the linen was dried in the open air in summer, in winter it was hung in buildings with walls covered with adjustable wooden slats to create air currents. Inside, a stove heats the room; there's also a well and an ironing room.
