ARTESIAN WELL
Puits Artésien, discovered in the 12th century by monks in Bougival, is a well in which water gushes spontaneously.
An artesian well is one in which water gushes out spontaneously. The principle takes its name from its discovery by monks in the Artois region in the 12th century. Drilled in 1929, this well takes its water from a depth of around 500 meters, in the Albien, a captive underground water table in the Paris basin, from which it emerges at 28°C. It is one of the wells installed to remedy the shortage of drinking water in the Paris region. At the end of the 19th century, as the Parisian sewers flowed into the Seine, it was impossible to drink the river's water.
