BULGIVAL LOCKS
Lock built to absorb the growing traffic established on the Seine with no less than 15,000 passages per year in Bougival
Between the islands of La Loge and Gautier, the old Bougival lock dates back to 1838. In 1879, in response to increasing traffic, a small lock was opened for the passage of so-called express boats. But one of the largest locks in France was built in 1883, to handle the growing traffic on the Seine. As traffic continued to grow, the latest lock was built to accommodate longer boats, but with a limited draught of no more than 3 m, it was unable to handle larger vessels.
