A remarkable park with ponds, playgrounds and relaxation areas on the banks of the Seine, the largest natural park in Île-de-France.
Located to the south of the city, on the banks of the Seine, Parc du Peuple de l'Herbe comprises Etang de la Galiotte, with its houses on the water, and Etang de la Vieille Ferme. At 113 hectares, it's the largest nature park in the Paris region. It falls into the category of sensitive natural spaces, whose vocation is to be "a new leisure area for escaping, learning and enjoying oneself between city and nature". The former wasteland has been rehabilitated and transformed to enhance and protect an ecosystem typical of the region. In terms of landscape, ponds have been created for the enjoyment of aquatic birds, an alluvial shoreline has been shaped with gently sloping banks, and thousands of aquatic plants have been planted to create reedbeds. There are also a number of viewpoints, and 13 kilometers of paths and trails to explore the site at your leisure. The aim is to protect the flora and fauna by enhancing the diversity of species present in the region.
The park is intended as a transition between the city and nature, with play areas, relaxation areas with benches, chairs and deckchairs, and 2 hectares of flower meadows. At the heart of the park is the Maison des Insectes: a vast space dedicated to the display of live insects and their breeding; with an observatory, located on the edge of the Etang de la Galiotte, offering a 360° panorama of the plain, the meandering Seine and the hillsides.
