ANDRÉ DERAIN HOUSE
The Maison Derain is a living testimony to the Fauvist artist André Derain and his era
Probably built in the late 17th century, the house belonged to the Bigot de Sainte-Croix and Bassan families. In 1935, the Fauvist painter and sculptor André Derain bought it and lived there until his death in 1954. In 1988, Dr. Albert Badault and his wife acquired the house and, after extensive renovations, opened it to the public.
In 2014, the commune of Chambourcy acquired the house and part of its grounds, which have been listed as a Monument Historique since 1986. The aim is to recreate the setting in which the master of Fauvism lived, giving it back its original appearance. The renovation was in the public interest, as the house is now dedicated to associations and culture. You can visit the painter's studio, which has been faithfully reconstructed. The property's layout features a pediment with an oculus, Mansard-style dormers, a turret and the Rotonde (early 20th c.), where the artist set up his studio for large-format works. Under the roof of "La Roseraie", in the salon, the memory of friends - Braque, Balthus, Giacometti, Renoir - is evoked; and in the studio, sketches, models and casts rest on tables and easels, preserved in their original state. You can watch a film in the Rotonde, before taking a stroll in the 3,000 m² park. Occasional performances are offered, including concerts of ballroom, classical and Latin music.
