THE JOSEPHINE HOUSE
A house that recalls the memory of Madame Campan, reader to the daughters of Louis XV and Josephine de Beauharnais.
This elegant 18th-century building is dedicated to Madame Campan, who lived here with her husband between 1785 and 1792. From the age of 15, she was a reader to the daughters of Louis XV, then chambermaid to Marie-Antoinette, to whom she remained devoted until her death. An outstanding educator, she founded a renowned boarding school that welcomed some of Napoleon's family and French high society. After the Campans had passed away, Joséphine, then still a Beauharnais widow, took refuge there with her children during the Terror between 1792 and 1794.
