THE DOLMENS OF ÉPÔNE
The dolmens of Épône sit in the middle of a small square bearing their name, in the heart of the residential district of Élisabethville.
The dolmens of Épône, also known as the "covered alley of Justice", are a group of two dolmens that sit peacefully in the middle of a small square in the heart of the residential district of Élisabethville. While one has been almost completely destroyed, its neighbor is well preserved, having been restored in 1956. Discovered in the 18thcentury , this type of dolmen is typical of the Neolithic period, the era of polished stone. Looted in 1793 by villagers in search of treasures, they were finally excavated in 1881 by Perrier de Carne and classified as a historic monument in 1887.
