THE OLD BRIDGE
This Old Bridge is the remnant of a 37-arch bridge linking Mantes-la-Jolie and Limay, partially destroyed in 1940.
Remnant of a 37-arch bridge that once linked Mantes-la-Jolie to Limay, its construction dates back to the mid-11th century - one of the oldest in France. It has undergone several alterations as the Seine flooded. At the end of the 18th century, it was demolished on the Mantes side and replaced by a new structure downstream, and in 1855, the other part of the new bridge, on the Limay side, was also brought into service. Immortalized by the painter Jean-Baptiste Corot and classified as a historic monument since 1923, the building was partially destroyed in 1940.
