THE DOOR TO THE PRIEST
A unique relic of the medieval fortifications of Mantes-la-Jolie, classified as a Historic Monument since 1955
Mantes-La-Jolie is a town that has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. Remnants remain, such as this Porte au Prêtre (Priest's Gate) below La Collégiale. A unique relic of medieval fortifications, it has been listed as a Monument Historique since 1955. Reinforced in the 14th century, the fortifications formed a defensive line along the Seine and were punctuated by gates and towers. The building commemorates a priest who helped take the town back from the English during the Hundred Years' War.
