This keep, partially destroyed in the c., was once part of the millstone castle of the Lords of Malrepast.
The construction of a millstone castle, with a wooden keep and large, rounded bailey, dates back to the 11th century - when the town of Malrepast (formerly spelled Maurepas) was the center of a châtellenie. During the Hundred Years' War, the lords abandoned the castle, which fell into the hands of the brigand Haymon de Massy and his men. The keep was largely destroyed in the 15th century, on the orders of the Earl of Arundel. All that remains today is a 20 m-high tower, listed as a Monument Historique in 1926.
