BRITTANY GATE
Early pointed-arched gateway, the last of three still visible in the medieval stronghold.
Built in the first quarter of the 13th century at the behest of Philippe Auguste, the Porte de Bretagne was part of an ancient set of walls enclosing the village of Montchauvet. The ensemble originally comprised three gates, each designated by the direction it faced. Today, this is the only one that can still be admired near the ruins of the ancient castle's keep. The perfectly preserved grooves of the portcullis can also be seen in the corner. It has been listed as a Historic Monument since 1932.
