THE OLD BRIDGE
This arched, masonry Vieux Pont is one of the few large bridges that once crossed the Seine.
The Vieux Pont played a major role in the town's development, as it was one of the few bridges over the Seine. In those days, the riverbed was wider and the banks lower and grassier. Topped by 4 mills, it had up to 37 arches. Fortified in the 17th c., it was fitted with a drawbridge and, at each end, a solid gate was opened and closed at set times. Over the centuries, the building underwent numerous transformations, and enjoyed its heyday during the Belle Epoque, when vacations on the banks of the Seine became fashionable.
