The national sheepfold receives thousands of visitors every year among its crops and its numerous animals
In 1785, Louis XVI ordered the creation of a farm within the Domaine de Rambouillet. At the end of the 18th century, Napoleon Bonaparte launched an operation to import merinos from Spain. In the 20th century, the national herd has become a jewel that all master shepherds strive to maintain in the best possible condition. Their breeding and herding practices are among the very best. Over the years, Swiss cows, African sheep, Angora goats and mouflons have been joined by Italian buffalo and horses. The site's educational vocation dates back to 1794. Today, it's a national public institution offering diploma courses, from CAP to professional degree, in agriculture and breeding, horses, insemination and animal health. Every year, thousands of visitors flock to the Bergerie Nationale to see its crops and animals, as well as the dovecote, the jewel of the royal court. The visit is also educational, with one workshop following another: hand-milking of goats or cows, animal care, sheep-shearing and sheep-dog demonstrations... There's plenty to keep afternoons occupied. An exciting visit for the whole family. Throughout the year, the site organizes a number of special events, often for the youngest visitors, such as the sheepfold's Christmas celebrations, but also for older visitors, such as the autumn farmers' market.
