SAINT-CHARLES HOSPICE
The son of the Count of Artois and the future King Charles X, Charles-Ferdinand, the duke of Berry, had acquired for barely two years this castle in which he was preparing to settle when he was assassinated in 1820. His young widow, Princess Marie-Caroline of Bourbon-Sicily, built a property on the outskirts of the castle's park to which she affected a charitable vocation to raise poor children and treat the sick, thereby extending the Duke's charity will. She also wanted the heart of her late husband, heir from the throne, to be deposited in the chapel that she was building for this purpose next to the hospice; the ballot box containing it was deposited in the 1960 s in Saint-Denis Basilica. Now administered by the municipalities of Mantises-en-Yvelines, the Saint-Charles hospice has been restored from the bottom to be renovated in a space dedicated to culture and art. It is possible to contemplate, in temporary exhibitions, painted or sculpted works of local and international artists. The site also serves as seat of the University of Mantois Camille Corot.
