THE CAVE RAILING
This ramp is a rare vestige of the Château-neuf, bearing witness to the royal history and grandiose water features of the period.
Along with the Lion Wall, the Grottes ramp is one of the few remaining vestiges of the Château-Neuf and its superb terraced gardens. The property was built at the end of the 16th century for Henri IV, but was abandoned by Louis XIV, who moved his court to Versailles. The ramp featured seven grottoes containing grandiose water features installed for the king's entertainment. The Doric gallery with its wrought-iron balustrade was completely restored in 2014. A signposted itinerary explains the history of the site.
