Exceptional natural place offering a multitude of possibilities: marked excursions, discoveries of the flora...
At 2 km east of Caunes, do not miss the remarkable site of Notre-Dame-du-Cros where 3 small dry stone chapels were built, "las Capeletas", above a miraculous spring, having the property to stop the fevers. Only now, a chapel remains attached to the limestone cliff. In the 12th century, the cult becoming increasingly important, a larger chapel is erected. It is mentioned in 1119 in a bull of Pope Gelasius II. The church is then restored many times, especially in the 15th and 18th centuries, and hardly anything remains of the 12th-century building. Inside, the choir is richly decorated: painted canvases, three tomb-shaped altars, a prayer pulpit and a font, here the marble takes all the forms and all the colors. Place of procession during the festivities of the Nativity of the Virgin and during the Assumption, the site Notre-Dame-du-Cros was also known for the fairs that are organized there. This exceptional natural location offers a multitude of possibilities: waymarked hiking, discoveries of the flora, climbing on the 70 tracks of rock-climbing.
