Erected on a steep rock, the castle was built in the late 10th century to watch over the coast and protect the town. A century and a half later, the Archbishop of Narbonne reinforced the fortress with the addition of a tower, known as Barberousse. 3. The marine cemetery in the Massif de la Clape
Nestled in the heart of the Massif de la Clape, Gruissan's marine cemetery is a peaceful haven for families to stroll at their own pace. This site leads tothe magnificent Notre-Dame-des-Auzils chapel, whose flag on the roof indicates its opening. All along the marine cemetery, the people of Gruissan have erected cenotaphs, tombs without bodies, in memory of their departed sailors. There are around thirty of them, forming the "Allée des Naufragés" which leads to the chapel. At Easter and Pentecost, fishermen and their families make a pilgrimage here to attend mass.
After climbing the long slope, visit the hermit's garden halfway up, then the chapel, with its 73 ex-votos donated by shipwrecked fishermen from Gruissan. Some are painted in trompe-l'œil, as they were stolen in 1976. The panorama is incomparable, offering views of Gruissan, the Mediterranean, the garrigue and the vineyards.

5. Gruissan church
The church of Gruissan, with its vaulted ceiling in the shape of a ship's hull, reflects the history of the town and the apostle Saint Peter, who protects the fishermen. Built in the 14th century, the church was originally fortified. Difficult to admire from the outside due to its location in the heart of the old village, it holds a pleasant surprise in store for those who take the time to enter. The edifice boasts a magnificent stone structure with exposed roof timbers and a rib-vaulted choir. Of particular note is the baldachin above the high altar and, if you turn around, an attractive wooden gallery.
