THE DOLMEN LO MORREL DOS FADOS
A dolmen built 3,500 years BC, comprising a gallery, an antechamber and a burial chamber.
Also called Palet de Roland, the dolmen of the Fades (fades meaning "fairies" in Occitan) is the most important dolmenic tomb in the South of France. This monument is located in the place called Moural de las Fadas, a small hill covered with pine trees, bordering the department of Herault. With a total length of 24 metres, the dolmen, built 3,500 years before Christ, consists of three parts: a 12-metre gallery, a 6-metre antechamber and a burial chamber. The red or grey sandstone used for this monument is of local origin. The limestones could come from the Causse de Siran, which is the closest place of extraction. According to Jean Guilaine, archaeologist and professor at the Collège de France who studied the site as early as 1962, this dolmen, dating from the end of the Neolithic period (around -3000), served as a mass grave for a very long time. His research has also shown, through the study of 13th century fireplaces, that during the Middle Ages this impressive monument was used as a hut. In addition, the mound that originally encompassed the dolmen is now 35 metres long.
