Visit Fort Vauban
Begun in 1689, this military edifice marks the end of the period of tolerance towards the Protestant religion. The king decided to revoke the Edit de Nantes (signed under Henri IV in 1598, revoked in 1685 by Louis XIV), the city needs a new place to supervise the recalcitrant and host the garrison in charge of religious conflicts. The fort therefore includes a prison and a housing area that will then be fully used as places of imprisonment during the Revolution of 1789 and then during the two World Wars. Now public property of the Department of Gard, the fort is open to the guided tour, upon reservation with the Tourist Office.
