FORT VAUBAN
Fort Vauban d'Alès is a symbol of defensive architecture and the conflict between Catholics and Protestants.
Built in the 17th century on the orders of Louis XIV, the Vauban fortress, citadel of Alès, is a testimony to the defensive architecture of the French kingdom under the absolute monarchy. It is also a symbol of the conflict between Catholics and Protestants. Built on a hilltop, it has the unique feature of forming a U-shape. Discover this monument, which was once a prison for Protestants, and stroll through the Bosquet gardens, which were laid out around it in the 18th century. The tourist office organizes guided tours in July and August.
