MADONNA TOWER
The tower offers a sublime panoramic view of the city and the Rhône plain, and its defensive character is still evident today.
At the top of the Bellegarde hill, the castle ruins offer a sublime panorama over the town and the Costière, and on a clear day can be seen as far as the Sainte-Baume massif in the Var. The last vestige of the 12th-century castle that gave its name to the town, this ancient feudal keep still imposes its defensive character today. The statue of the Virgin and Child, Notre-Dame de Bellegarde, was installed at the top of the tower in 1875. An open-air theater hosts outdoor shows, including the Festival de l'Humour in June.
