THE HOLY BALSAM
La Sainte-Baume is a site with a chapel, cistern, vaulted hall and staircase in Lirac.
An ancient Neolithic cave, the present-day history of the Sainte Baume begins in 1647 with Joseph Queyranne, a resident of Lirac, who is said to have found an image of the Virgin Mary in the cave, which cured him of epilepsy. The archbishop then ordered the construction of a chapel and Joseph vowed to live in the cave. In 1712, the hermitage was enlarged, and people came from all over the region to ask the Virgin Mary to cure the sick. The hermitage comprises a chapel, a cistern, a vaulted room and staircases. Pilgrimages still take place here.
