CHAPELLE SAINTE-EUGÉNIE
Chapel being the oldest still in activity in Nîmes, housing a Romanesque nave with barrel vault, historical monument
Listed as a historic monument since 2009, this chapel is the oldest church in Nîmes still in use (dating from before 956). Of medieval origin, it retains a Romanesque nave with a low barrel vault supported by double arches. A very simple string course runs along the walls, giving this part of the church a very unadorned appearance. The western facade was rebuilt in molded cement at the end of the 19th century in a neo-Romanesque style, after the church was returned to worship in 1877.
