The Porte Auguste was the main entrance to the town on the Via Domitiana, coming from Beaucaire

It was Emperor Augustus who gave Nîmes the longest Roman city wall in Gaul. The Porte Auguste (also known as Porte d'Arles) was the city's main entrance on the Via Domitia from Beaucaire. It was used to control entry and exit. The archaeological site, closed to the public, can only be seen through the ancient gates. The statue of Augustus was reinstalled after the Second World War, following the theft of the original in the 1930s. The thieves left the pedestal, which came from a tower of the Porte Auguste that had been partly demolished.

Cette porte fait partie des vestiges des remparts de la ville. Site très intéressant d'un point de vue historique, mais malheureusement pas assez mis en valeur alors qu'il y a de la matière.

Un monument antique dans la ville. A voir absolument!
One of my favourite spots of Nîmes, to see! With 2 pas des arenas for nice photos refitting of the site and the row of palm trees. A charming visual break in the bustle of the city centre.
A less known city square which is worth the trip.

One of the gates of the city during the Romans.
