THE PRAIRIE FOUNTAIN
Monumental fountain in Nîmes, by sculptor James Pradier.
This marble fountain is the monumental work of sculptor James Pradier and architect Charles Questel. Dedicated to water, which has accompanied the city's history, the female figure represents Nîmes, Nemausa, and the allegorical figures surrounding her symbolize the Gardon, the Rhône, the Eure fountain (which the Romans harnessed to bring water to Nîmes via the famous aqueduct) and the Nîmes fountain. Lion heads through which the water flows complete the fountain. A small frog hiding in the reeds will amuse the children!
