Saint-Gilles, an ancient Greek port city named Héraclé, experienced a real boom when a canal was dug to link the port of Sète to the Rhône. It was the region's most important port until the construction of Aigues-Mortes. The centuries that followed were punctuated by numerous works for its commercial function. In 1985, it was transformed into a marina - the only one in the Nîmes metropolitan area - and now boasts 89 canals.
