ESPEYRAN CASTLE
This castle located in Saint-Gilles and surrounded by a park of 13 hectares, houses a large archaeological reserve
Built in the 19th century by Les Sabatiers, a wealthy middle-class family from Montpellier, the château estate was previously the summer residence of the Abbey of Saint-Gilles, and was occupied as far back as antiquity. Traces of all these eras remain, making it a major heritage site, and the Centre National du Microfilm et de la Numérisation moved here in 1973. The 13-hectare landscaped park is a bird sanctuary, bordered by an archaeological reserve. The site's well-preserved interior and exterior make for a unique visit to the Camargue.
