CARBON TOWER
Built on an old courtyard of the Vistre, this square tower has been the guardian of the Aigues-Mortes fortress since the 13th century (around because we are not quite sure of the dates). Majestic and solitary, it rises in the middle of the marshes and its haughty silhouette reminds the walker that in the Middle Ages, it was the compulsory crossing point (and tollbooth) for all visitors travelling to Aigues-Mortes, at the same time as a useful defensive outpost (it was held by a garrison and four artillery pieces). Today, we pass there for the visit or to avoid the crowd that comes back from the beaches. But the detour is really worth it! From the top of the terrace, you can enjoy a 360-degree view of the Petite Camargue, its ponds and canals. Renovated about ten years ago, the Carbonnière tower is once again open to the public. A 12 km pedestrian path, through the marshes, leads from Saint-Laurent-d'Aigouze to the Carbonnière Tower. The opportunity to discover the ornithological fauna that populates this part of the Camargue Gardoise.
