A magical site to discover with your family, with fantastic rocks that have improbable shapes in Sauve
Come to discover this chaos of rocks in the scrubland which overhangs the roofs of the medieval village of Sauve. In the heart of the Massif du Coutach, the Sea of Rocks offers on the heights of Sauve a magnificent spectacle, at the same time wild and as worked by nature. It is a magical site to discover with your family, which leaves room for poetry and imagination. You can get there by climbing the narrow streets of Sauve which lead to the top of the village, then by taking a path winding between ruined stone walls, vestiges of ancient dwellings, agricultural constructions, cisterns or low retaining walls of abandoned agricultural terraces. You will gradually discover an astonishing limestone chaos, along a network of small paths and in the middle of a luxuriant nature. These fantastic rocks display improbable shapes, standing like sculptures in a dense vegetation of scrubland type, mainly made up of holm oaks and oleanders. This land, which is now desolate and was once fertile, was used by the villagers until the middle of the 20th century to cultivate orchards of cherry trees, peach trees, fig trees and hackberry trees. The orchards were abandoned and the scrubland took over. On the marked out path of approximately 5,5 km which traverses the site, you cross the "Castellas", emblematic construction of Sauve which sheltered a guardhouse. On the outskirts of the Mer des Rochers, you will also find the castle of Roquevaire, the remains of a castle whose origin remains uncertain.
