THE MAUSOLEUM OF LANUEJOLS
Mausoleum for the two children of Julius Bassanius, an outstanding example of Gallo-Roman funerary architecture
Around the 3rd century, a Roman mausoleum was built in Lanuéjols to commemorate the children of Julius Bassanius, a wealthy colonist whose name has survived thanks to the inscription engraved on the lintel at the entrance. Now restored and showcased, it is an exceptional example of Gallo-Roman funerary architecture. Experts and walkers alike appreciate its architectural quality. The structure is adorned with Corinthian moldings and sculpted arabesques, floral motifs and figures. Listed as a historical monument, it's well worth a visit.
