THE GORGES OF THE JONTE
Go there and contact
These Jonte gorges, located in Saint-Pierre-des-Tripiers, are marked by a series of small hamlets.
Between Le Rozier and Meyrueis, the Gorges de la Jonte reveal picturesque hamlets such as Le Truel and Les Douzes, where vultures find refuge beneath the imposing cliffs. Not far away, the Saint-Gervais chapel stands proudly, and its cemetery continues to be used by the valley's inhabitants. This place is unique in France, being the last one where coffins are carried on human backs, following a steep path winding up the cliff. The procession starts behind the Jonte restaurant, adding to the solemnity of this ancestral ritual.
